Collection: Francesca Kemp Textile Art
Based in a rural village in the stunning Kent countryside, I draw inspiration for my embroidery pieces from my beautiful surroundings. Im so lucky to have such inspiring views and wildlife all around, we moved here from the coast to start a fresh new chapter, and so far its been the best choice we ever made. The dramatic, rolling countryside makes me realise how insignificant the stresses of this world really are. Who would have thought 10 years ago that I would have given up my job, moved to the country and learnt how to compost?! But here we are, and its simply magical.
Every time I see something inspirational I start researching and mapping out each piece in my sketch book. Some don't make it past this stage, only the really special ones make it out into the real world, transferred to quality water colour paper or fabric as working designs.
I usually add in small pieces appliqué, trying to source from pre-loved fabrics, lots of which come from charity shops or markets, I have huge hoards of tiny scraps and love finding new treasures when out and about, Im pretty sure it drives 'The Mr' absolutely mad!
Each scene is drawn out using freehand machine embroidery; using a special foot on either my much loved Bernina industrial sewing machine; Bernie (get it?!) or a vintage Singer. Moving the fabric under the needle to draw onto fabric in thread, starting with the background colours and finishing with the final black stitching to pop the design.
Some of my favourite pieces are scanned by a fantastic local company and used to produce a beautiful range of high quality gifts and homewares. These lovely products are made by a variety of wonderful, UK based suppliers.
